The season is drawing to a close, but the players deserve credit for continuing to fight for every point - our attacking form has not been good enough to bring many wins, but five draws in the past six reflects the tenacity with which we have played.

Neal has talked the talk, as all managers do, about the importance of the remaining games, with the idea that some of the squad might be "playing for their future" a familiar refrain.

But is there any truth in the suggestion that a couple of good performances can change a manager's mind about a player?

A fair few of our squad are already signed for next season; Bulman, Shea, Fuller and Akinfenwa, plus an assortment of academy products, are all already contracted for the 2015/16 campaign.

There are others, such as Francomb, Rigg, Azeez and Kennedy, who have almost certainly done enough to earn an extension, should they want it.

We can also presume that peripheral figures like Worner and Phillips will be on their way, leaving a minority of players for whom the future is unclear.

The only players I can think of who may be in such a position are Jack Smith, Sammy Moore and Alfie Potter - for what it's worth, I would keep Sammy on, and let the other two go.

Out the door: Peripheral figures like Ross Worner will probably be on their way

It is a welcome change to have quite such a settled squad, and it feels like (for the second season in succession) there is no need for a major summer overhaul - we can focus on signing quality players in key areas, rather than racing to replace all those who were released.

Neal has already revealed his intentions to pursue the signatures of on-loan centre-backs Goodman and Oshilaja, and if he is successful, there could be as many as 18 or 19 of this season's squad (including younger players like Beere and Nightingale, among others) staying on at Kingsmeadow for 2015/16.

And so while the idea of playing for contract extensions may be slightly exaggerated - Neal and the rest of the coaching team will surely have a good idea already of who they want to keep - this squad continuity means that there is an importance to the last few games, as a chance to try out new things.

We've seen some interesting formations (including a lopsided 3-4-3) and tactical variations, some of which have worked better than others, offering an insight into the sort of things we might be seeing next season.

If we can reconcile some of the creativity we've shown in recent weeks, particularly against Wycombe, with the efficiency in front of goal we saw earlier in the season, then we could be in for a treat next season.
