Our big signings this summer were the stellar strike partnership of Matt Tubbs and Adebayo Akinfenwa - but the duo has been uncharacteristically quiet in recent weeks.

They combined to score 14 of our first 20 goals, but Akinfenwa's header against Tranmere was the only goalscoring contribution from either of them in the past seven games.

For Akinfenwa, this drought is not too much of a problem: he offers a lot more than just goals. In the past two games he has shown himself to be back to his aerially dominant best, and continues to be the facilitator for much of what we do well.

Tubbs, here on a full-season loan from Bournemouth, is more of a concern. In the 11 games since he got sent off against Burton (seemingly a turning point in his form?), he has managed just one goal.

And unlike his physically imposing strike partner, his confidence really seems to have taken a hit.

The smart link-up play and clever runs off the ball are nowhere to be seen - leading to speculation as to whether he’ll still be wearing yellow and blue come February.

It's no secret that his future is far from decided upon, and perhaps his exceptional early-season form awakened Bournemouth to the possibility of making some money from him before his contract runs out this summer.

The amount we've invested in these two strikers means that if we have any aspirations of a top-half finish, they'll need to start scoring again sooner rather than later.

Surrey Comet:

Out of sorts? Matt Tubbs

After losing Michael Smith in January last season, Neal Ardley will almost certainly have a contingency plan should something similar happen with Tubbs.

But ultimately, any half-decent striker ought to be able to find some measure of success with Akinfenwa playing alongside him.

A player of Tubbs' quality will undoubtedly rediscover his goalscoring touch eventually, and I'd prefer it to be with us - but it wouldn't be too catastrophic if he was to return to the south coast early.

You feel that both strikers just need one lucky break, something to boost their confidence, and the goals will start flowing again.
