Surbiton Hockey Club’s Hollie Webb is still going to bed reliving the moment her 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medal dreams were dashed by a late Aussie heart-breaker.

England were leading the favourites 1-0 in the gold medal match on Saturday night, through Lily Owsley, only for Jodie Kerry to equalise with seconds to go.

It was a repeat of the semi-final clash against New Zealand on Friday, which England went on to win in the shoot out.

However, against Australia it was not to be, and while the Hockeyroos claimed gold after a 3-1 shoot out win, Webb, and her Surbiton clubmates Giselle Ansley and Georgie Twigg took silver.

Webb said: “There were real mixed emotions after the game, we were pleased to win silver after coming 11th in the World Cup in June.

“But we were so massively disappointed not to win.

“We knew the game was not over until the final whistle, we’d learned that lesson against New Zealand when they scored in the final three minutes.

“But Australia left it so late it was heartbreaking.

“We’re normally good in shoot-outs, and Maddie [Hinch, goalkeeper] had done her homework on the Australians, but sometimes it just does not happen.”

She added: “I still go to bed every night thinking about those last few seconds.

“Maybe in time we will be able to look back and be proud of our achievement, but at the moment it’s massive disappointment.”

Webb and her clubmates will be back in Surbiton colours for the domestic season next month.

“I am looking forward to hooking up with everyone again, and hopefully we can bring our good form out of the Games and into the team,” Webb said.
