Surbiton head coach Todd Williams reckons England have missed a trick in letting Matt Daly slip away from international hockey.

The 30-year-old former England international finished the MHL Premier Division campaign as the league’s leading scorer with 22 goals and was named in the division’s team of the season.

His prowess at penalty corners – where he scored 17 times – helped fire Williams’ men to a top-four finish this term and the last 16 of the EuroHockey League.

Daly – like fellow Sugden Road favourites Rob Moore and James Tindall – has not been involved in the international set up since the London Olympics, with the current England squad heading to the World Cup and Commonwealth Games without the Kingston Grammar School teacher as they prepare for the 2016 Olympics.

And Williams thinks Daly’s absence is a big oversight.

“Matt has been absolutely fantastic for us this year since coming back from a knee injury,” he said.

“It has been wonderful having players like him, James Tindall and Rob Moore playing regularly for us.

“The international programme does not allow for players not preparing for the next Olympics and it seems odd not to select players of Matt’s experience on that basis.

“We’re lucky to have players like him available.”

Surbiton might not have any current England interantionals in their squad, but the club’s Celtic connection were busy at the weekend.

Scotland internationals Fergus Dunn, Alan Forsyth, Chris Grassick and Nicholas Parkes earned bragging rights over Wales goalkeeper David Kettle in a two Test series between the countries at the Commonwealth Games stadium.

Forsyth scored the final leveller in a 3-3 draw on Saturday, while Grassick netted one of his side’s goals in their 5-1 win on Sunday.

The Welsh and Irish – featuring Surbiton’s Michael Watt – play a four-nation tournament with Russia and Spain in Barcelona this week.

Meanwhile, Surbiton brothers Jonathan and James Gall are in the current 28-strong England U21 squad preparing for the European championships in July.

The pair featured in two performance internationals – both drawn – against Belgium U21s last week.
