Surbiton team boss James Lloyd insists his side’s success is not down to a handful of star men.

London Olympians James Tindall and Matt Daly and Scotland international Alan Forsyth (twice) were all on the scoresheet as Canterbury were beaten 6-1 on Sunday to mark the official opening of the club’s new pitch at Sugden Road in style.

There was also a brace for 18-year-old debutant Will Calnan as Surbiton secured a top four championship play-off spot, thanks to the win and  fifth-placed Wimbledon’s surprise 2-0 defeat to bottom-club Loughborough Students.

And Lloyd reckoned Cranleigh School student Calnan’s contribution proved there was more substance to the squad than a few big name players.

“It’s not just about Daly and Forsyth,” said the manager after watching Forsyth take his season’s goal tally to 16.

“It’s the whole team that has got us in this position.”

Head coach Todd Williams, who has the latter stages of the EuroHockey League to prepare for over Easter, takes his team to relegation- threatened Cannock on Saturday.

Surbiton Ladies also secured a top four WHL Premier Division finish 24 hours earlier with two games still to play thanks to a 4-1 triumph over league leaders Canterbury.

An Abi Robinson brace added to goals from Sarah Page and Sophie Fisher-Norton – her first in the first team – as the visitors conceded their first goals since November in only their second defeat of the campaign.

Surbiton, still chasing top spot, go to Bowdon Hightown on Saturday.
