Herne Hill Harriers excel in the indoor arena

Herne Hill Harriers' track and field athletes continued their preparation for the upcoming season by chalking up a string of individual victories at the Surrey Indoor Championships.

Sprinter Marvin Popoola and Ismail Abdul-Karim, and Tayo Andrews in the high jump, were among the winners at Carshalton, while a personal best for Jess Collins in the U13G high jump elevated her to number two in the UK rankings this year.

Jess Collins not only cleared 1.45m in the high jump, she also finished second in the U13G long jump with a leap of 4.40m.

Fellow high jumper Tayo Andrews cleared two metres for the second time this year, with a highest effort of 2.01m, as he easily won the U20M crown.

Christopher Sinclair was another winner in the U17M long jump with a personal best of 6.37m in the final round of the competition.

Away from field events, Harriers dominated the 60m and 60m hurdles events with Marvin Popoola (U20M 60m), Ismail Abdul-Karim (U17M 60m), Ade Adeniran (U15B 60m hurdles), Jade Phillips (SW 60m hurdles) and Rushane Thomas (U20M 60m hurdles) all becoming Surrey champions.

Elsewhere, Harriers' road runners were involved in preparatory races at the 26.2 Valentine's 10k at Chessington ahead of April's London Marathon, with Chris Busaileh (second, 32 minutes, six seconds), with Mohammed Ismail (seventh in 33.57) and Robin Jones (eighth in 33.58) being part of a winning Herne Hill team.

Jonny Muir was 13th in 35.31 and Jonathan Ratcliffe 19th in 36.39. Natalie Zara was 10th woman in 41.40.

Racing at the Race Your Pace Half Marathon at Eton Dorney, Alison Hackney was fourth woman in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 31 seconds and Laura Dowsing was eighth in 1.35.02.

Robert Edwards, meanwhile, clocked 2:06.31 in finishing 45th. Eric Dol was 151st in 2:21.52 and Patrik Ewe 303rd in 2:37.13. 

Andrew Simms clocked 1.29.21 in finishing 381st in the Brighton Half Marathon.

Herne Hill athletes also filled three of the first six places at the Dulwich parkrun, with John Tayleur third in 16.52, Robert Edwards fifth in 16.57 and Billy Black sixth in 17.29.
