Epsom & Ewell Harriers’ chances of promotion from Division Two of the Surrey Men’s Cross-Country League are all, but over following a disappointing eight place finish in Saturday’s penultimate meeting.
Steve Winder’s 31 minutes 38 seconds over the five-mile course to finish 13th was the highlight for the Harriers as the team slipped from third overall to fourth – 305 points behind leaders Reigate Priory.
Winder was followed by Stuart Flack (18th, 32:08), Will Clark (20th, 32:18) and Clayton Payne (41st 34:13).
In Division Three, Tadworth AC go into the final meeting on February 8 in seventh place after finishing seventh at the weekend.
Paul O’Callaghan led the team home in 10th place, clocking 32:20 – his nearest clubmates were John Melbourne (33rd, 34:29) and David Williamson (35th, 34:41).
Epsom Oddballs are in the running for promotion from Division Four after a fine display of consistency last weekend.
Barnaby Hopson’s 35:40 secured eighth spot, while the remaining nine runners all finished in the top 50 – including six in the top 30.
Elmbridge Runners currently lead the division, 458 points ahead of the Oddballs, who in turn are 142 points ahead of third-placed British Airways.
There was further action in the Surrey Ladies’ Cross-Country League, with Tadworth fielding eight runners in the penultimate Division Two meeting last weekend.
Hazel Imeson was the club’s first through the tape in 32nd, clocking 38:25, followed by Jane Munn (47th, 40:25) and Mary Matthews (43:15).
Their 12th place finish on the day sees them head into the last Division meeting in 12th overall.
In Division One, Epsom & Ewell Harriers remain ninth in the overall standings after finishing the day’s race in seventh.
Isabel Brinsden starred for the Harriers, clocking 33:21 to finish 14th.
