Former Brentford boss Uwe Rosler has revealed the decision to join Wigan Athletic was not as easy as some may think.

The 45-year-old agreed to join the current FA Cup holders last week after the former Premier League outfit called time on Owen Coyle’s reign.

It left the Bees managerless for Saturday’s cup trip to Carlisle United where Rosler’s assistant Alan Kernigan oversaw a 3-2 defeat at Brunton Park to exit the competition.

Rosler, who has signed a two-year contract at WD stadium, took charge of his first game for the Latics in the Europa League at Maribor in Slovenia last night.

He arrived at Griffin Park with a stated aim of managing in the Championship either with the Bees or elsewhere.

And, despite Wigan chairman David Whelan offering him a dream shot at reaching the top flight, Rosler admitted the whirlwind decision was not as easy as it might have looked.

“It was totally unexpected and it all happened really quickly,” he said.

“It was an exceptionally difficult decision, because I wanted to finish what we had started.

“The squad we had put together this season was designed not just to get promotion, but to compete at the next level.

“The target this year was promotion and now somebody else will get the credit.”

Rosler, who led the club to the League One play-off final last term, famously described his relationship with the club’s supporters as like a marriage – having its ups and downs.

But he is pleased to have left on good terms.

“Ninety nine per cent of the time they created a fantastic atmosphere at Griffin Park and I thank them for their support,” he added.
