Sutton United boss Paul Doswell insists that Tuesday night's 2-1 win over promotion-chasing Welling United sent a message to his own dressing room, rather than other teams in the Blue Square South.

Craig Dundas, with his 50th for the club, and Harry Ottaway got the goals that meant Jamie Stuart's header that hit the post and Sam Rents' penalty miss would not return to haunt United.

A late Wings consolation made for a nervous finale, but Doswell was left describing a "stellar" performance and a leap up the table of seven places to 13th.

"It is not about sending a message to the League, is about sending a message to the boys in the dressing room," Doswell said.

"I've just told them that it was a stellar performance, they were superb and need to believe that we are good enough to play like that,

"That is the standard we want to set ourselves now."

He added: "There has been a change of tactics over the past couple of weeks, and the players have had to take it on board and tonight you saw a team that pressed for nearly 90 minutes, and at this level that is unusual, and when we pressed high up the pitch we created four or five really good chances."

Earlier in the season United would rue the missed chances and Doswell has talked at length at not getting what they deserve from games.

However, even after Rents's penalty was saved and the first half chances had gone begging, Doswell continued to convince his players their new approach would pay dividends.

He said: "I tried to stay calm about the penalty save. We had hit the post, the penalty was deserved and their keeper has made two good saves - at that point, as a manager, you jusy have to tell the lads to keep believing.

"At half-time we asked the players to carry on believing in what we were trying to do.

"When we pressed, Welling were not getting the chances. I could have been stood here talking about a 1-0 defeat and that would have been harsh, but it was not the case."

United host Eastbourne Borough this weekend, and welcome Basingstoke to Gander Green Lane on Tuesday.
