Carshalton Athletic boss Tommy Williams was disappointed but not disheartened following his side’s 3-1 defeat against rivals Kingstonian on Saturday.
The defeat sees the Robins remain at the bottom of the Ryman Premier League but those around them also failed to pick up any points, keep Williams' hopes of survival alive.
“I thought we deserved more from this game as we both started and finished it the better team,” he said.
“If we had taken one of the several chances we created before they got theirs on the half hour, the outcome could have been different.”
Kingstonian scored that opener following a fine break and added what Williams called “defensively a sloppy second” on 50 minutes, with the third arriving within two minutes just two minutes later.
Carshalton striker Ola Sogbanmu headed his seventh goal of the season from a Luke Pigden free kick on 74 minutes, before Williams threw caution to the wind by changing his side’s system, and it almost paid dividends.
“When we got the goal, I brought on two extra forwards and went to three at the back as Kingstonian tried to flood the midfield,” he said.
“We could have won it 4-3 with the amount of decent chances we created.”
Sonny Ayres had a neat turn and shot blocked by Ks keeper Rob Tolfrey’s feet and Sogbanmu put a header over from three yards before Ryan Gardiner, played in one-on-one with Tolfrey by a perfectly weighted Pigden pass, beat the goalkeeper but put the ball narrowly past the wrong side of the post.
“Ryan was disappointed with himself afterwards, but his overall contribution was good," Williams said.
"If we keep creating the chances, I’m confident all the lads will start to get more goals under their belt.”
Carshalton welcome fellow strugglers Hendon to Colston Avenue on Saturday, February 2, kick-off 3pm.
