Boss Mark Harper reckons two hard-fought away draws have improved the atmosphere around Hampton & Richmond Borough, writes Tom Ambrose.

The Beavers were due to travel to Sussex tomorrow hoping to get their faltering promotion tilt back on track after just one win in nine league games, but the match fell foul to the weather this morning.

With Whitehawk only losing one home game this season so far, boss Harper, who allowed defender Dean Inman to sign a three-month loan deal with Blue Square South Farnborough Town last week, had hoped Hampton could  make it two.

“We are quietly confident we can go to Whitehawk and turn them over," he said on Thursday.

“We have prepared well, but the weather is a problem – we want to try to get the ball down and play.

“The atmosphere around the club is much better than it was a few weeks ago.”

Harper, whose team beat Hillingdon Borough 3-0 in the Middlesex Senior Cup on Tuesday, has been under scrutiny since the turn of the year ever since bening given three games to save his job after a 1-0 Boxing Day defeat to Carshalton Athletic.

But after two draws at Kingstonian and Lewes, the Beavers boss, who remains on good terms with chairman Steve McPherson, is confident the pressure on his job has lifted a little.

He added: “All managers face some sort of pressure – I talk to the chairman everyday and we have a good relationship.”
