Hamann: Robins need to fight and believe to maintain Premier Division status
Goalkeeper Nick Hamann says Carshalton Athletic will definitely beat the drop, as long as they maintain their fighting spirit and belief.
The German shot-stopper had little to do in the vital 3-2 win over fellow strugglers Enfield Town on Tuesday night – giving him chance to cast an eye over his team-mates’ attitude.
Nathaniel Pinney’s hat-trick was not enough to lift the Robins off the foot of the Ryman League Premier Division, but it keeps them in touch with safety.
It could have been different if a handball shout in the Robins’ penalty area had not gone unrewarded but Hamann, who has been an ever-present this season, says they deserved a little bit of luck.
The 25-year-old said: “There is a long way to go, but tonight was a very important result because if we lose against teams that are down there with us, it is going to be a struggle.
“But two wins and a draw off the last three games is very decent and if we continue like that we’re going to be safe sooner rather than later.”
He added: “We can definitely beat the drop, otherwise we wouldn’t be playing. We’d be giving up. If we’d given up we would have lost today.
“We showed a lot of character after going 1-0 down, but we just talked to each other. We have nothing to lose so why not go for it.”
Enfield made for a nervous final 10 minutes after pulling the Robins back to 3-2, but in spite of the penalty scare and some heavy pressure, Tommy Williams’ men held out.
Hamann said: “I have seen those penalties given to be fair, but at the same time we had a penalty in our last game given against us, which to me was not a penalty, so maybe our luck has changed a bit.
“But we showed real fight and character, and if we carry on like that, we believe we will beat the drop.”
Carshalton host Cray Wanderers this weekend - Cray went down 5-1 at Thurrock on Tuesday night, effectively ending Thurrock's dalliance with the drop zone - for now.
