Carshalton Athletic felt hard done by after leaving Bognor Regis on Saturday with nothing to show for arguably their best performance this season.

However, a 2-1 defeat keeps the Robins rooted to the foot of the Ryman League Premier Division ahead of tonight's (Tuesday) six-pointer against fellow strugglers Enfield Town at Colston Avenue (kick off 7.45pm).

Despite bossing the game for long periods, the Robins conceded a decisive penalty in the first-half before suffering a late offside decision that cost manager Tommy Williams and his side at least a point.

“There were times when the game was so one-sided in our favour that I don’t know how we ended up coming away with nothing to show for it,” he said

“We passed the ball well and everyone worked their socks off, I cannot fault the lads’ commitment.”

In an entertaining game, Bognor took the lead against the run of play in the seventh minute but Carshalton reasserted their dominance and equalised through Nathaniel Pinney’s third goal in as many games, flicking home Sam Griffith’s header from a Luke Pigden corner on 23 minutes.

Bognor’s winner came from the penalty spot 15 minutes later after Josh Clarke clumsily brought down Doug Tuck, and Ashley Robinson just beat Nick Hamann, who dived the right way.

Robins sub Phil Williams thought he had snatched a dramatic equaliser on 89 minutes as he latched onto a Pinney through ball and lashed it home from 15 yards, but a late linesman’s flag curtailed the celebrations.

Williams said: “We didn’t get the decisions today, I felt the penalty was weak and Phil was definitely onside when he made his run at the end.

“However, I think giving Ola Sogbanmu more support up top with Nathaniel, who is in goalscoring form at the moment, and having Phil, Sonny Ayres and Ryan Gardiner in the squad means I’m confident we’ll get goals in future games.

“We knew how Bognor like to play, they build right from the back at every opportunity, so we worked on keeping our shape and I was pleased with the discipline we showed throughout.

"I felt so sorry for the lads as they really deserved something for their efforts but we should take all these positives into the Enfield game.”
