9:00am Saturday 29th December 2012 in Sport By Stuart Amos
The Richmond & Twickenham Times takes a brief look back at the sports stories that mattered to the borough in 2012.
January: Karl Dickson is one of a record nine Harlequins named in head coach Stuart Lancaster’s England elite player and Saxons squads for the Six Nations. Danny Care was not among them due to a series of alcohol-fuelled mis-demeanours.
February: Richmond footballer Gani Nuredini captains the England Independent Schools FA U18s team for the second time against the Royal Navy having led them to a 3-2 win over Australia in January.
March: Striker Joel Ledgister fractures his knee cap in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie less than two weeks after joining Hampton & Richmond Borough from Sutton United for an undisclosed fee.
April and May: London Scottish celebrated scoreing a bonus point try in a final that ensured their Championship survival despite a final day defeat to Esher. Hampton & Richmond Borough were relegated from the Blue Square South, despite a final day win at Thurrock. Will Warden scored twice as Richmond won a dramatic National Division Two South promotion play-off against Caldy in extra-time. And London Welsh beat the Cornish Pirates in the Championship final.
May: Harlequins capped a memorable campaign by beating Leicester Tigers 30-23 in the Premiership final at Twickenham to be crowned champions for the first time in the club’s history.
June and July: Gavin Henson signed for London Welsh and Tony Rea returned as head coach for the London Broncos.
