Former Wimbledon boss Dave Bassett hailed the Dons’ display at Stadium MK as being glorious in defeat.

And, despite suffering the disappointment of exiting the FA Cup in such heartbreaking style, Bassett is not “unduly disturbed” by the defeat.

“It was a shame they did not get that opportunity  to bring Milton Keynes back to Kingsmeadow, but maybe it is for the best,” Bassett said.

“Dons are down the bottom of League Two and we want to stay in the league and any replay would have been a distraction.

“So I’m not unduly disturbed that they went out, they made a good go of it, they played well, the players can be proud of their performance.

“I thought Milton Keynes ran out of ideas very early on and they had to rely on a wonder goal to take the lead.

“Even then I did not think they would run away with it and even after half-time when they put a bit of pressure on us, they could not break us down.

“Then we got that wonderful equaliser and when Steven went through I thought ‘This is it’, but it was a terrific save. And then, we all know what happened.

“The boys might have been more disappointed if MK had drawn Manchester United in the next round and it was going to be half a million quid into the bank but, while Sheffield Wednesday are a big club, it would not be a massive amount of money going into the club.

“From the Dons’ point of view, it was a case of glory in defeat.”

Bassett was speaking at the Budweiser Club Futures event where he presented Combined Counties League Premier Division side Raynes Park Vale with a cheque for £50,000. Budweiser Club Futures is a non-league football initiative set to invest £1m into grassroots football over the next two seasons.
