Midfielder Matt Pattison reckons Kingstonian have the experience and ability to cause an FA Trophy upset.

The 28-year-old bagged a brace as boss Alan Dowson’s men won 4-1 at Brentwood Town on Tuesday night to set up first round proper clash with Blue Square Premier high-flyers Dartford.

Ks, currently riding high in the Ryman Premier League, won the competition twice under legendary boss Geoff Chapple.

And Pattison, compared favourably by some fans to Trophy legend Geoff Pitcher this week, admitted reaching a Wembley final was an added incentive

“Dartford are two leagues above us and in the play-offs and are maybe doing better than expected at the moment,” he said.

“But we are full of confidence at the moment and are scoring goals – we nearly kept a cleansheet on Tuesday too.

“I’ve played in the Blue Square South and there are plenty of people in our team who have at least played Blue Square South, Premier and even higher.

“We have that experience and ability.

“People talk about playing in the FA Cup, but with the FA Trophy there is a realistic chance of reaching Wembley and that is something we’d all love to achieve.”

Ks have threatened to cut loose at times this season but have been guilty of squandering a host of chances with Saturday’s 2-2 home stalemate with their Ryman Division One North rivals a case in point.

But Tuesday’s replay saw Kingstonian – through Pattison’s brace and further goals from Craig Mullen and Keiran Murphy – 4-0 up at the break.

Dowson has been impressed by his side’s ability to bounce back from disappointment this term and Pattison, who now has eight goals to his name, agreed it was a good sign for the remainder of the campaign.

“With the exception of the Wealdstone defeat I don’t think we have deserved to lose a game,” he added.

“Everyone is sticking together and even with all the missed chances we are still the league’s top scorers, which can only be a good thing.

“We’ve got Thurrock – who are bottom – on Saturday and we are expected to beat them.

“But we cannot take anyone in this league lightly.  The way things are going anyone can beat anyone.”

Only striker Andre McCollin has scored more goals than Pattison this term, but the former Woking and Farnborough man reckons that could be down to his new role on the right side of midfield.

“If I play central midfield I have to be a lot more disciplined, but coming in off the right I can roam,” he said after Saturday’s draw, which came thanks to goals from Craig Mullen and McCollin.

“I’m enjoying it a lot more. The team’s doing a lot better – better passing, better movement – and that helps.”
