A shortlist of 15 designs has been chosen by Kingston's public art panel as contenders to create a work of art on College Roundabout.
After a public exhibition on February 11 and 12, the panel met this week to finalise the shortlist from more than 250 designs submitted by Kingston University and Kingston College students.
Students will now be individually briefed and asked to develop their idea and include detailed coating for their designs before the final judging takes place in April.
Councillor Frances Moseley, head of the public art panel, said despite a petition against the proposals, which has so far gathered just two signatures, public support had been "very encouraging".
"It's been an exciting process and we're really optimistic - there are several designs that would be really great for the roundabout," she said.
Coun Moseley asserted that the money for the scheme had come from a section 106 planning agreement, where developers contribute money to regeneration projects, and cash was not being kept from essential services.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing the designs taking shape and for the students to develop them on a larger scale," she said.
