In 2016, thanks to a generous donation from Heathrow Community Fund’s Communities for Tomorrow grants programme, the River Thames Boat Project were able pilot an exciting new project called Eco-Access.

“The charity was increasingly receiving cruising clients who were requesting short learning activities whilst on board, to boost their knowledge and understanding of the river environment, and develop awareness of the need for positive action to combat litter, pollution and climate change” Gemma Hindi, then Education Manager, River Thames Boat Project.

The Eco-Access project was designed by the then Education Manager to integrate some of the charity’s Eco Venturer education and learning activities (usually delivered only to schools and youth groups) into the Summer cruises for people with disabilities. The activities were designed to be as accessible and hands-on as possible, adapted to suit a variety of different ages and abilities.

The cruises on Venturer, for disabled and elderly client groups, took place during the Summer-Autumn of 2016, with the passengers taking in the views of the Thames upstream of Richmond. Feedback from the pilot programme has now been gathered:

What was your favourite activity today?

“Renewable energy, that was sick! I made a fan [motor] spin using a fan [wind turbine]!” Young person with autism.
“I pledge to keep all my litter in the bin” Young person with Autism.
“I wonder what people in 500, 1000 years’ time will think of us from our rubbish left in the river” Linking People Afloat disabled passenger.

“A huge thanks to you and the Thames Boat Project team for making it such a memorable day out for the boys (and the lucky staff who were forced to support on the day!)” Disabled young people group leader.

Thank you Heathrow Community Fund.

Heathrow Community Fund is part of an independent grant-making charity set up by Heathrow’s owners to support and strengthen local communities close to the airport. In the past two years, it has donated more than £1 million through three grant programmes, funding projects which support young people, help protect the environment and support active local communities. Funds come from an annual donation from the airport, donations from airline passengers and fines imposed on aircraft that breach noise limits.  Enquiries to info@thamesboatproject.org
