An artist is working with school children to bring a mural back to life.

Brian Barnes, who is famed for his murals painted on buildings across the borough, is painting the 10ft high mural on the wall of the playground in Chesterton School, Dagnall Street.

Mr Barnes first painted the wall in 1999, but it became damaged by mould and sunlight.

The wall has been given a new surface of cement to replace the bare brick and has been covered with a white undercoat.

Mr Barnes is currently sketching the design for the mural and he hopes to incorporate elements of the Battersea Puzzle mural in Plough Road, Battersea which could be destroyed if a church building gets demolished.

He said: "It will be a shame for it be demolished, perhaps the new development will provide space for a new mural.

"The children have been researching ideas about the landmarks and history, including life of the eponymous GK Chesterton.

"I have budgeted for the work and begun a sketch to scale and work painting the mural will begin when the weather improves."
