‘You’re too old to drink here’

These friendly folk don't look the type to be barred from their local pub.

But the Queen Adelaide cricketing club and their wives have been officially ejected from the pub they play for - they say because of their age.

“We understand the decision by the landlord was the culmination of a long period of antisocial behaviour by this group of people over the past 14 months, that had led to a number of our bar staff refusing to serve them. The landlord of the Queen Adelaide has our total support for his decision.”

Young's spokesman

Chris Locke, 50, and his friends have been drinking at the Putney Bridge Road pub every Friday night for 15 years, even after it was revamped in 2005 and began attracting a younger, trendier crowd.

But as the club were finishing their drinks on the Friday before Christmas, the manager approached Mr Locke.

"He called me over and said, we'd rather you didn't come here anymore'," said Mr Locke. "He said you're clearly not happy here'."

The manager said the cricketing club and their friends had been rude to his staff. He permanently barred all 25 of them, including former Wandsworth councillor Pauline Brueseke, from the Queen Adelaide.

The middle-aged group have now been taken in by The Bricklayers Arms in Waterman Street and have renamed their cricketing club after it.

Young's have vehemently denied allegations of ageism.

Mr Locke, of Norroy Road, said: "It's a shame to put it mildly. We weren't causing any harm. This pub has been part of our lives. OK, it's changed, but it's our local and it should be our decision whether we stop coming."

A spokesman for Young's, which owns the Queen Adelaide, said the manager's decision was not linked to age.

He said: "We understand the decision by the landlord was the culmination of a long period of antisocial behaviour by this group of people over the past 14 months, that had led to a number of our bar staff refusing to serve them. The landlord of the Queen Adelaide has our total support for his decision."

Mr Locke said: "Those allegations are ludicrous and quite nasty. It was the first conversation we'd ever had with the manager, which he admitted to me.

"If we were causing problems why was this never raised before? We are hardly a bunch of hoodies. It's obvious we just don't fit his profile of customers."

He said City workers from the new Riverside development nearby had begun flocking to the pub since it was refurbished, but his group had still enjoyed going there for a quiet drink to start off the weekend.

"There's a definite fad among the breweries for simply targeting the wealthy young, and it becomes a herd instinct," he said.

"Eventually they are all going to fail on that basis because they are ignoring a lot of people who will be there a lot longer."

well i think that is out of order, im 33 years old, and i preffer to see a local pub with the local croud, and not full of young people with only one thing in mind, that is to get obliverated, and make others feel unconfortable. it is a shame.

Well done the Bricklayers and well done the cricket club in moving on and away from such blatant ageism. I agree with Carlos above.

I agree. Young's seem intent on ruining all their pubs for anyone over 25. What they've done to the Spotted Horse and Duke's Head in Putney is a disgrace. And well done the Bricklayer's Arms, London's best pub, for showing the sense Young's clearly lack.

As one of those banned I have always had very friendly relations with the bar staff at the Queen Adelaide and even the Manager Tim Leese until he refused to come up with a gluten free menu for a group of 25 Coeliacs (worth over £500 on a mid-week evening) and instead he suggested an evening called Let's Get Laid at the Adelaide! Nuff said!

I think this is barmy. What evidence does the manager have on anti-social behaviour and if he does have any why does he not inform the team members what this is. If it was that bad why did it take him so long to take any action. Even worse is that Young's are backing him presumably with some evidence to hand or are they just taking his word. I'm afraid Young's are doomed since Wells took them over so you can expect to see more of this sort of thing and old Young's pubs closing down. Pubs are having enough trouble attracting custom post smoking ban so why does this manager want to get rid of regulars who presumably have provided loads of income over the years. I propose that as many people as possible don cricket whites or other cricket attire and turn up at the pub as a protest and see what happens to them. I'm glad the cricket team have found a new place to drink but it's the principle that matters.

14 months is a long time to accept anti-social behaviour in a pub - in that period of time there must have been ample opportunity to log any number of complaints internally and with the customers to arrive at this decision? What has changed in the last 14 months out of 15 years? Tim, in my experience acts like heÂ’s stuck in a career and a downward spiral due to dependency and this position seems to cause his own anti-social behaviour whereby he takes the frustration of an unfulfilled life out on people around him. I hope that my fellow cricketers continue to enjoy The Bricklayers Arms and have a similarly long standing relationship. I also hope that YoungÂ’s and his friends can help Tim at a time when he seems to need it most.

In many years as locals, we always enjoyed a standing joke that Youngs had a 'charm school' for a long succession of managers, ensuring that they always did and said the wrong thing, particularly to well behaved regulars. It is strangely comforting to know that after much investment in bricks and mortar, the management remains as ****-poor as ever. In our experience the place has not been well run since Pete & Jo Henderson moved away, 20 years ago!Next time we'rein town we'll catch you all at the Bricklayers!

As a former resident of Atney Road, Putney in the 80s, I'm disappointed that it seems to have gone so far downhill. Mind, I don't recall a pub in the Putney Bridge Road of that name, so presumably it's nearer the Wandsworth end, or it's been renamed from something else. Still, Youngs seem to have lost the plot, probably all the money from selling the Ram Brewery site has gone to their managerial heads...

I lived in Putney for 10 years, with the Queen Ad as my local. The pub was unique because of those very people who have just been sent packing. You couldnÂ’t find a more entertaining and hospitable bunch. To a man and woman they are funny, intelligent, caring and hospitable and you were always assured of a warm welcome. You would think if you were running a pub youÂ’d be looking for just that sort of clientele. Now they have taken their custom elsewhere those of us re-visiting Putney will follow them.

I'm afraid I agree with the Landlord. Sadly, I knew them well: they were a terribly anti-social bunch and far too old to be allowed out in the evenings, let alone mingle with normal people. My thoughts are with the regulars at the Bricklayers Arms ....

I arrived at the Queen Adelaide to watch Tri-nations rugby and saw a notice displayed enquiring about cricketers. I phoned, joined, played and thoughrouly loved every thing the team and members said and did. They made me feel most welcome and part of a community. Through this team my wife and I became friendly with the then manager and his partner and we would regulary visit the pub (2 or 3 times a week) often having a meal. We no longer attend as we do not know anybody there and there is no where to sit unless you are prepared to sit at a table with 8 strangers.
PS I still play for the team and travel over an hour to games and an hour home again and am not old or anti-social.

We had a similar problem at the Selly Park Tavern in Birmingham when I worked there many years ago. It was in a fairly studenty area, but with some older clientele and a lot of visitors from the BBC.

A group of older customers, who had been drinking in the pub for 20 years launched a hate attack on the manageress, submitting completely false and quite upsetting complaints (usually implying discrimination on he grounds of age and disability) to the owners, 6 Continents.

People need to learn that things change, and just because you have sat in a seat in a pub for 20 years does not mean that you own that seat, nor that you can treat people with such contempt.

I think that it displays the sheer lack of respect so many of the older generation show to others. If I hold a door open, I'm more likely to be thanked by a busy mum with a multi-buggy than I am by an over 50.

They should consider it an embarrassment

As a member of The Queen Adelaide Cricket Club I would just like to say that we have been based at The Queen Adelaide pub for fifteen or so years and we have always enjoyed a good relationship with the staff there. In fact several previous Landlords have played for the team. The present Landlord has been largely anonymous and appeared no longer interested in having a cricket team and all the social events that it entails. This seemed a shame but many of us still met up there on a Friday evening for a social drink. However after the outrageous behaviour of the landlord witnessed by many on Friday 21st December a complaint was made to YoungÂ’s & Co.
Young’s initial response to the complaint included spurious counter claims made by the Landlord of “anti social behaviour” allegedly by us. These are simply untrue and are a smokescreen to defend his behaviour and a customer profile sifting exercise for The Queen Adelaide.
We feel that the complaint has not been investigated properly and I have asked YoungÂ’s& Co for an explanation of the Landlords behaviour and details of the counter claims, but so far have received no reply.
We are all fifty years old or thereabouts and are respectable members of the Local Community, so it seems even more odd that YoungÂ’s & Co should bury their heads in the sand and lend their support to a landlord who seemingly does not support their equal opportunities policy.
Young’s & Co must either substantiate their claims of “anti social behaviour by this group of people over the past fourteen months” or retract them, preferably with an apology.
