Celine Dookhran’s grief-stricken mother has paid tribute to her “beautiful, caring” daughter after the man who murdered her at a house in Kingston was jailed for at least 40 years.

Mujahid Arshid, 33, received a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years for the murder, and other sentences for the 20-year-old’s kidnap and rape, as well as the kidnap, rape, sexual assault and attempted murder of another woman.

Ms Dookhran’s mother, Iman Naeem, who sat in court throughout the trial at the Old Bailey, said: "Celine was our beautiful, caring, funny, intelligent daughter.

"She fell victim to pure evil. The disgusting and senseless actions of Mujahid Arshid deprived Celine of a great future where she could go on to further her ambitions.

"Everyone loved Celine. She was instantly likeable to all those who knew her. She was great at giving advice and encouragement to everyone who needed it."

Arshid, of Homefield Gardens in Mitcham, became obsessed with the two women, and grew jealous because of other relationships they were in.

In July last year, he bound and gagged them before taking them to a house in Coombe Lane West that he was renovating in his work as a builder, where he attacked them.

The surviving woman, who cannot be identified, described her ordeal in court, and also said of Ms Dookhran: “We always knew we had each other's back. Words cannot describe how much I miss her.”

She also said she suffered from "constant flashbacks and nightmares", and the scars on her neck and wrists were a "constant reminder of what Celine and I went through".

Mr Justice Edis, while sentencing Arshid on February 14, described the survivor as an “intelligent, resourceful young woman” for fooling Arshid into letting her live, convincing him they could run away together.

Arshid fled, but was caught by police in Folkestone, Kent, and the judge dismissed his version of events as “absurd”.

Ms Dookhran’s family said in a statement: "We are pleased with the verdict and the sentence, but would like our final words to be about our wonderful Celine; we love you, we miss you and thank you for being an amazing, brilliant, funny, intelligence and caring daughter, sister, cousin and friend."
