Commuters are set to face another rise in rail fares at the beginning of next year.

July’s Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation measure determined the rise of 1.9 per cent which will take effect from January.

The increase was announced by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday.

Transport Focus, Railfuture and the Campaign for Better Transport called on ministers to use the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for setting fares, rather than RPI.

CPI, which was 0.6 per cent in July, is used for calculating pensions and most benefits. Commuters from Weybridge heading into Waterloo will see their annual rail ticket of £2,816 increase to £2,869, a rise of £53.50. after the increase a £53.50 hike.

Rail users from Surbiton and Kingston will have to pay an extra £34.50 a year for their annual pass.

Rail minister Paul Maynard said passengers “want more reliable journeys in comfort and with better facilities”.
