An artist is appealing for help to realise her dream of printing her illustrated children’s book.

Asta Kalpokaite, 39, from West Ewell, has launched an online campaign to raise £6,000 to print 1,000 copies of her story Mum, I want an Octopus. She hopes to market and distribute the book independently if the campaign is successful.

The professionally trained artist, and mother of two, has worked on the book since 2012, in collaboration with a co-illustrator based in Lithuania. Mrs Kalpokaite’s husband provided the words.

Mrs Kalpokaite said: “It is about a child who wants different pets after visiting a zoo. Mum, as a responsible parent, explains with a bit of fun why they cannot get the animals.”

Despite receiving praise from publishers, Mrs Kalpokaite was unable to find any takers for her story. She is hosting an animal themed children’s book party on Friday, June 17 from 4pm to 6pm to promote her campaign. As well as a presentation of the book, drinks, snacks and arts and crafts will be provided.

It will take place at The Art Room, Unit 4, rear of 127 Chiltern Drive, Berrylands, KT5 8LS.

The campaign has raised almost £500, with donations coming from as far afield as the US and Australia. If the target amount is not raised by July 5, all contributors will receive their money back.
