Vandals dumped a "lorry-load" of newspapers along a Worcester Park street.

A trail of papers stretching half-way along Central Road, Worcester Park, was first spotted at 5am on Wednesday.

Bins had been hurled over amid the mess, which extended from Sainsbury’s to the towards the Pizza Express restaurant.

Your Local Guardian:

Richard Johnson, a member of the Worcester Park Residents’ Association (WPRA), said there was no way it could have been accidental.

He said: “There’s no doubt. It was deliberate.”

“The papers were flung along the high street for about a quarter of a mile, and they were on both sides of the street.

“For those bins to go over they would really need heavy wind, and we didn’t get that, and they were knocked over in different directions with no continuity – so it definitely wasn’t caused by something like that.”

“The community is what you make of it and so if you destroy it, it will have an impact on us all.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the force received reports of a "lorry-load" of newspapers dumped along the street this morning.

He added that Worcester Park Safer Neigbhourhoods Team will be making enquiries to determine whether this was a case of fly-tipping or poorly bundled newspaper storage or deliveries.

Simon Densley, WPRA chairman, said: “It looked to me like it was deliberate because both sides of the road were covered and bins were seen to be knocked over.

“It’s rather sad that people would think to do that when we have a lot of people trying hard to keep their area tidy, and all it takes is a few people to come along and spoil it.”
