An actor and member of Kingston Arts Council has died aged 76 after a very short illness.

Barry Rocard, described as “one of life’s true gentlemen” died on September 13 in Kingston Hospital.

A long term supporter of the arts in Kingston, he served on the executive committee of the arts council.

Aine Lark, chairwoman of Kingston Arts Council, said: “Barry captivated audiences in a myriad of roles and guises.

“His more formal work for Kingston Arts extended to readings at our festival evensongs and performances of Shakespeare’s finest speeches, delivered with all the aplomb of a theatrical master. He brought something very special to those occasions.

“Barry also mentored our emerging actors and young theatre companies, nurturing them through their early stages of play production and script development.

“Always measured and calm in his approach to life, work and play, Barry had a natural ability to ‘hold court’ and enamour anyone who would listen with anecdotes and stories and sometimes a song.”

Mr Rocard is survived by his wife, Meta.
