Dancing on nice: Soulmates prepare for medical charity fundraising show
6:30am Tuesday 5th November 2013 in Top stories
They spent 10 years dancing together, but it took them just a few months to realise they were soul mates, writes Alessia Nava.
After meeting at Michael Burton at the Semley Ballroom in London in 1999, Martina knew he was ‘the one’.
This month, along with Tenors UnLimited, they will host a show of operatic cross-over music and dancing in Kingston to show support for The Victoria Foundation, a medical charity set up through the sale of the New Victoria Hospital in Kingston.
Martina says: “I had just moved to England from Germany and was advertising for a new dance partner. He came through the door and I knew straight away, he was the one I wanted to dance with.”
“It was sort of a blind date. I didn’t know who I was meeting.
“Then I saw Michael and recognized him from a few competitions, I was aware of who he was but never met him. I thought he had really pretty eyes.”
They represented Australia from 1999 to 2004, and although they represent Germany in the professional ballroom field, they currently give lessons at the Kingston Dance Studio, in the former Gala Bingo hall in Richmond Road.
They have been dancing together since, and became professional ballroom champions. They married in 2009.
Scott Ciscon, Jem Sharples and Paul Martin – billed as ‘The Rat Pack of Opera,' have been working on this show alongside the Burtons for a year and are now ready to perform it for the first time in Kingston.
Jem Sharples says: “We are looking forward to perform with them very much. It’s going to be a great honour watching them dance to our music during the show.
“This is a very new thing for us and we’re very excited. We hope it’s going to be a great success.”
‘When We Dance’ will feature original music from the three tenors and ballroom dancing. During the interval there will be a raffle accompanied by coffee and cakes.
When We Dance, Kingston Dance Studio Canbury Park Road, Sunday, November 24, 3pm, £15 - £20. For tickets, e-mail email@example.com or call 07760 376386.
