The founder of a domestic violence centre and a business mogul have been celebrated today as inspiring women.

Jo Keogh, who opened the Domestic Violence One Stop Shop, was ranked in a list of the Metropolitan Police’s seven most remarkable women.

Ms Keogh said: "[My mother] always told me that there was nothing I could not do. She encouraged me to read widely, travel far and that my opinion was just that. My opinion."

Ruby McGregor, Kingston University graduate and boss of Mitie, made a list of the 100 most powerful women in the UK compiled by Radio 4.

The list included The Queen, JK Rowling, and Adele.

After studying economics, Mrs McGregor went on to join the strategic outsourcing company, becoming the first Asian female CEO of a FTSE 250 company.

Kingston University celebrated women’s history week this week with events including a talk on women and mental illness, and a screening of documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

International Women's Day celebrates the successes of women and raises awareness of the discrimination still present in society around the world.
