A driver has been hospitalised after flipping his car and knocking out a set of traffic lights in Kingston last night.

The Vauxhall Astra overturned on the one way system by Birkenhead Road and the junction with Queen Elizabeth Road at around 10.40pm.

Police and London Ambulance Service both attended the crash.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said: “At 10.45pm we were called to reports of a car overturned.

“We sent one of our ambulance crews. Staff treated a 23-year-old man for minor arm injuries and back pain.

“He was taken to St George’s hospital as a priority.”

How fast must he have been going to turn over a car on that stretch of road?

I am glad to hear that his injuries are minor, but more glad to hear that no one else was injured.

Let's ensure that he is now banned from driving for a long time.

Actually, I guess that at the age of 23 he will be unable to get insurance again for a while once his current company have paid out for the cost of the traffic lights!

I do hope that the injuries are minor. Glad that no pedestrians who would have been using thecrossing or footways were hurt. This is a well-known spot for drivers leaving the road. They used to crash though the fence of Tiffin Boys' but since the council widened the road and resurfaced it drivers can take the bend much quicker! They put some big kerbs to contain all but the fastest vehicles too. It's time to get rid of the one-way system. Return it to two-way traffic, impose a 20 mph speed limit with mini-roundabouts, width restrictions and a change in feel and we will have more civilised driving in the town centre. The existing Cromwell Road (why do we celebrate him?) is treated as a fast straight on a race-track by far too many people.

That is the answer. The Kingston one way system is designed dangerously close to a racetrack and the night-time economy is designed to attract just the type of person who will drive it like one.

Ideally, we'd put it back to how it was but that will cost a lot of money so a few speed cameras would be a welcome (and self-financing) addition.

It depends, two wheeled motorbikes seem to be the most dangerous form of transport of them all.

Pushbikes are my favourite form of transport and should be the safest, but I am not sure thet will find a lot of support on this site due to the poor behaviour and road manners of most cyclists (not me I hasten to add!)

I strongly disagree with you? How strongly? On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 strongest it'd be 10. Most cyclists in my experience behave well on the road and have good manners. It's the exceptions you remember, not the vast majority of well behaved people. If you see someone doing something wrong you remember them. You don't remember the ones who are doing it all by the book.

Well your experience is obviously vastly different to mine. I walk about 60 minutes each day on my way to and from work and I cannot remember the last day when I did not see multiple examples of cyclists jumping red lights/zebra crossings, cycling on pavements.

I also see motorists doing similar things, but far less frequently and I must pass about 20 times as many motorists as I do cyclists.

A few weeks ago, I was cycling myself and was waiting at a red light at the busy Claremont Road/Maple Road junction in Surbiton. Another cyclist shouted something at me as he zoomed past straight across into Surbiton Crescent. I can only assume he thought I was mad for waiting at the light.

In central London, the police have actually started to pull over cyclists who are riding dangerously and issue on-the-spot fines. The sooner this starts to happen in Kingston the better.

I have no doubt that there are law abiding cyclists, but I don't think it is a very high proportion.

The proportion of law abiding drivers however is approximately zero if not actually zero.

You just have to look at the electronic speed indicator signs that the council put up to be able to easily judge that. Oh, and the number that jump traffic signals, and pull out in front of side roads (failing to give way) into the path of oncoming bikes, motorcycles and other vehicles.

There is no denying that the quality of driving is very poor as well (just look at the original article here!), but I just don't think that the public perception is as bad as it is with cyclists.

Believe me, as a keen cyclist myself I'd prefer the perception to be better but I just don't think it will improve at the moment. People seem to be more ready to accept cars speeding and 'amber gambling' than they are to accepting cyclists riding on pavements and routinely ignoring red lights. This is probably because most of them commit the motoring offences themselves.

Interestingly, the number of cyclists obeying the rules in central London seems much better than in Kingston. I am not sure if this is to do with the fines or just because it is even more dangerous to cycle unsafely up there.

This does not include the cycle couriers of course who are the worst of the lot.

Just because the perception is that cyclists are a law unto themselves doesnt make it true. And just because peple driving cars and vans and trucks deem it acceptable to speed doesn't make it OK. This story and the one about the Porsche in the nail bar speak volumes to me. It's been a long time since there was a story about a cyclist injuring anyone in the borough or causing any damage.
