The Rose theatre held back from selling off Dame Judi Dench’s dress as part of its fifth birthday celebrations last night to get a better price for it from international fans of the Bond star.

A private auction was due to receive bids for the dress worn by Dame Judi in her sell-out run as Titania  from February 2010.

But theatre chief executive Robert O’Dowd said: “We have identified the interested parties, and we are trying to find a good way of doing an online auction.

“We actually chose not to auction the dress last night. It is such a great item that we would want to open it up as much as possible.

“We have a supporter base overseas and we are trying to get them involved as much as possible.”

He said: “We had three objectives, one was to have a fun night, which it was, and celebrate the Rose’s anniversary.

"It was nice to have so many of the actors who have worked with us there, and thirdly it was a fundraiser, the point was to raise funds, which we did."
