A 87-year-old man who married his wife because he knew he was going to be sent away on military service celebrates 65 happy years together this month.

Frederick Chaffe only got to spend six weeks with his new wife Eileen, now 85, before he was whisked off overseas, where fought in World War II in Egypt and Italy for two years.

He returned, and together they have enjoyed 37 years together in Sutton, and marked their April 4 anniversary by holding a reception at the Sutton Bowling Club on April 22, where they have both been members for 25 years.
