Platform extension granted for Sutton stations

Platform extension granted for Sutton stations Platform extension granted for Sutton stations

Passengers tired of hearing how "customers for Hackbridge and Carshalton Beeches must board the first eight coaches of the train" will be relieved to hear the platforms are set for an extension.

Following the news Southern, which manage the stations, placed an order for 130 new carriages, there were fears some of the borough's stations would not benefit from extended trains.

However, with many Southern trains being enlarged from eight carriages to 10, the company have confirmed the platforms at the two stations will indeed be lengthened to accommodate them.

A spokesman for Southern said: "Longer 10-car trains will be introduced on some of our busiest Metro routes into Victoria, including routes via Gipsy Hill, Norbury and Hackbridge when the winter 2013 timetable comes into effect in December of that year.

"Not all of our stations have the capability to accommodate 10-car trains, but the platforms at Carshalton Beeches and Hackbridge stations will be lengthened to do this by the time the trains are introduced. This is very much in the planning stage, so at the moment, a schedule for the work has not yet been determined."

In December it was announced Hackbridge station is to get a £350,000 facelift.

The work, set to begin this year, is aimed at making the station more accessible for passengers, especially older and disabled people and those with pushchairs or luggage.

Changes include a new step-free path from London Road to platform two, an accessible toilet, an adjustable ticket counter and automatic doors.

This story revives happy memories of a weekend bucket and spade cheap day excursion from Tooting to Brighton I travelled with my parents in the 50s. The green slam-door compartment stock electric train was so long that at Merton Park it had to stop twice as it was way longer than the platform. I remember as we stopped for the second time I was in the front portion which was straddling the closed level crossing over Kingston Road. We held up the traffic for what seemed a very long time and my position was sitting in a compartment in the middle of the road with a view of the signalman working in the tall box adjacent and the police constable on point duty now long replaced by automatic traffic signals.

Longer trains, longer platforms will be only a temporary fix as the demand is driven by population growth through immigration and birth rate. A very long train eventually stretching from the buffers at Victoria to those at Brighton would not help.

True, but why do Hackbridge and Carshalton Beeches get it first when Wallington has also got this problem ? why not all three, as we are told Wallington needs or is supposed to be getting regeneration, and there has been an outcry about lack of parking there as well

Firstly, someone needs a spell-checker before writing a news story.
Secondly, it would be better if the dangerous gap between train and platform was reduced, you almost need a step ladder when using southbound trains at Hackbridge.

Krissi,

Wallington station is being extended to allow 10 car trains to use the platforms and will be completed in time for December 2013. However this article is incorrect and neither Hackbridge or Carshalton Beeches will be extended and the source from Southern is wrong.

Leapy, Network Rail are trying to improve the stepping distance problem but only when other works are planned. So for instance Clapham Junction Platform 15 is being improved during the extension works and the same at Waddon
