A family from Cheam managed to raise £12,000 to combat cancer.

Little Cameron “Cammy” Austin was only two-years-old when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He underwent two years of treatment and chemotherapy at the Royal Marsden in Sutton.

Cammy’s mother, Elaine Austin, 42, said: “I felt powerless to help my baby and we had to just watch while he was pumped full of chemo.”

At the time the Royal Marsden was raising funds for a new Children’s Day Care Unit and the Austin family decided to do something worthwhile while Cameron faced his struggles.

Mrs Austin organised a charity ball to raise funds in June 2010, for which this newspaper raised awareness.

The event was held in Cheam Sports Club and was hosted by comedian Tim Vine and managed to raise £12,000.

It is now three years since Cammy was diagnosed with cancer; he has now completed his treatment and is in full remission.

Mrs Austin said: “During a time of recession, when everyone is feeling the pinch, it is very reassuring to know that when something serious happens in a community like ours, everyone pulls together and extraordinary things can be achieved.

“A massive thank you to everybody who gave for this fantastic cause. You know who you are.”
