Big Walk Once a Week Campaign launched in Sutton

This year's Big Walk Once a Week campaign is hoping to persuade more pupils to walk to school.

The Smarter Travel Sutton initiative is running in 46 primary schools and will reward children who walk to school regularly with badges.

The Big WOW scheme, which started in 2006, aims to reduce car use, promote environmental sustainability and healthier lifestyles.

A council spokesman said: “Parents of children who walk to school on average save £400 a year on petrol.”

Councillor Kirsty Jerome, executive member for education and schools, said: “This is a great campaign. Not only is it good exercise but it also makes children more alert in classrooms, benefiting their learning.

“By using cars less, people will also save money, help the environment and reduce traffic around the borough, especially outside schools, which makes the streets safer for children.”

The initiative is aimed at children aged from four to eight and runs throughout the school year. It is linked to the 2012 London Olympic Games and a baton will be passed between schools. Sutton will receive the baton from Merton on 18 October and will pass it to Croydon on the 19 October.

Most kids/parents do walk to school that I know and this is just a government way of labelling a "look at me campaign of greenie pc crap". We don't have to be told to do this by big brother. The waste of money on these badges that my daughter tosses in the bin must be costing the taxpayers a pile too. Save one way, waste another, that's governments logo whomever is running it at any given moment.

I agree, Sutton Council should get it's school places sorted before issuing badges for the fortunate ones who get their local school. With the scandalous lack of school places in this Borough, many unfortunate children and parents have to drive as no consideration of distance is made and then the children who live next door to the school get the badges and taunt the ones who don't because they live so far away they have to drive. Well done Sutton Council very green indeed, what a waste of taxpayers money! Perhaps if they scrapped this scheme saving the badge costs and the wage costs of the people who administer it they would have the funds to increase the class sizes.

Why is the Guardian still showing the Boris takes a walk along Sutton High Street line? That happened many weeks ago and he was only here for ten minutes the article adds so hardly worth mentioning. Worst of all is the Guardian are not letting anyone add to the two posted comments. Either remove the item completely or allow readers to add their comments.

Ken Livingstone may have damaged children's health by giving them free travel on the bus. I watch very overweight kids ride for just one or two stops, sometimes stuffing their faces with sweets.

I wonder how many future heart attacks will have come out of the Livingstone factory?

Come on Boris you can put this right!!
