Sutton police station takes in Notting Hill Carnival arrests

Sutton police station was used as an overspill for some of the hundreds of revellers arrested at the Notting Hill Carnival last weekend.

As one of the Capital’s largest police station’s Sutton provided invaluable support to the Met by housing some of the 230 people arrested at this year’s event.

The carnival was described as a success by police who said crime fell by a third this year.

The 230 arrests mark a tiny proportion of the estimated one million people who attended the three-day street festival in west London.

But Chief Inspector Jo Edwards said the event had been largely trouble-free and for the fourth year there were no firearms incidents.

He said: "Most carnival-goers had a fantastic time, with the large part of the bank holiday weekend passing without serious incident.

"However, as we have seen in previous years, last night saw some people determined to try and ruin it for others who simply wanted to enjoy a day out at Europe's largest carnival."

Westminster council said more than 100 tonnes of waste was collected by its team of 170 cleaners in a record time of three hours and 16 minutes - 25 minutes quicker than last year

Can someone recommend a good place in Sutton to recycle old press releases?

I agree.

Chief Reporter Phil Space is rather busy this week with lots of non-local non-news.

Has the Guardian merged with its Westminster counterpart? So we guage the success of an event like the Notting Hill Carnival by the fact nobody was arrested for firearms offences, yet 230 were arrrested for other offences, including a number for carrying knives. This event costs Londoners as a whole millions of pounds in Policing, which should actually be a cost borne by the organisers - sort it out for next year Boris or ban it.

They try to say Notting Hill Carnival is a good thing, a success, but 230 and raids before the event shows it's not a good idea and stirs up trouble. Some people just can't be civil and obviously this brings out the worst. Why not just save the taxpayer money on arrests and scrap the whole farce. If anything it makes the argument for multiculturalism fall flat on it's face as things that work in English society.
