A violent sex attacker who evaded police capture for 20 years after raping and beating a woman about the head was jailed for 13 years.

Kevin Walters, 39, of Hurricane Road, Roundshaw Estate, Wallington, was 19 when he attacked the woman in her own home on March 27, 1990.

Mr Walters repeatedly clubbed her around the head with a blunt instrument before raping her.

The woman, now 61-years-old, was half naked and bleeding heavily when she managed to escape into the street and Mr Walters fled.

The case was subject to a cold case review in 2009 and which led to the arrest of Mr Walters on April 20, 2010.

Mr Walters first appeared City of London Magistrates’ Court on April 21 charged with rape and at Southwark Crown Court on June 29, he pleaded guilty to rape and to grevious bodily harm.

In sentencing today at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Geoffrey Rivlin QC said: “This was a terrible incident which began with a prolonged and violent - and in my mind merciless - attack.

“It was an episode of appalling brutality. ”

In a statement read to the court, the woman told how she thought she was going to die during the attack.

She said: “I remember thinking one more blow to my head and I am dead. ”
