Sutton burglar who smashed his way into home jailed

A burglar who caused £1000 of damage when he smashed his way into his victim’s home has been jailed.

Billy Peaty, 18, smashed three separate windows to break into the four-bedroom detached house on Burdon Lane, Cheam, on Wednesday December 23.

Sutton Magistrates Court heard Mr Peaty, of Egmont Road, Sutton, broke a rear kitchen window and two panes of glass in the utility room causing between £700-£1,000 of damage.

The court heard Peaty then entered the hallway and set off the alarm system.

He was later arrested on Thursday January 14 and charged with burglary with intent to steal.

Borough forensic manager Fiona Albone said forensic examiners were able to use the latest crime scene technology to extract evidence from the scene.

At the court on January 20, Mr Peaty was also ordered to pay £700 compensation and costs of £85.

He was handed a ten week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Except the burglar hasn't been jailed. His suspended sentence means that he goes straight home from court, not straight to jail.

Arguably, he hasn't even been punished, with the £700 compensation he's been ordered to pay not even fully covering the cost of the damage he's caused.

Exactly - how can he have been jailed if the sentence is suspended? Great, now he's back prowling and burgling in Egmont Rd. Look out Sutton.

Plus he's no doubt unemployed & will therefore pay back the compensation & costs at £1 a week from his benefits.
