A young athlete from Wallington High School for Girls stormed to victory in the Adidas London Mini Marathon last week.
Grace O’Leary, 16, was first across the line in the 15-17 years girls race, beating over 250 competitors from other London boroughs.
The mini-marathon is run annually along the last three miles of the famous London marathon course, shortly before the main event starts.
From Sutton, 48 budding young athletes competed in six races for boys and girls, in 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 years categories.
Sutton finished an impressive fifth overall out of the 33 London boroughs, with third place individual finishes from Tom Holden, 12, of Wilson’s School and Eleanor Smith-Hahn, 12, of Nonsuch High School.
Executive member for leisure on Sutton Council, Coun Graham Tope said: “Congratulations to Grace and all of our competitors for an outstanding performance. The result shows that junior sport in Sutton is in rude health.”
All runners were selected at an open trial held at Sutton Arena earlier in the year.
