Liberal Democrat Nick Emmerson has won the Stonecot byelection.

The Liberal Democrats polled 53.2 per cent of the vote compared to the Conservatives' 20.7 per cent. Labour got 14.9 per cent, UKIP 9.4 per cent and the Green Party 1.7per cent. The turnout was 24 per cent.

The result means Councillor Emmerson replaces his Liberal Democrat predecessor Brendan Hudson who stepped down from the council after taking a place on the new Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group's board.

The Conservatives' share of the vote collapsed by 10 per cent with the Liberal Democrats getting a three per cent rise and Labour a five per cent rise.

Results from the byelection were announced late last night after people spent the day going to the polls.
