A property developer planning to turn the former Red Lion pub in Tolworth into 58 homes, three shops and a pub presented its case at a public inquiry at Kingston Guildhall this week.

The plans by Surbiton company CNM Estates were rejected by Kingston Council in July, because the buildings were too dense and out of keeping with the area.

Tolworth councillor Rob Lee criticised the “rabbit hutch” style apartments at the time and called for more family homes to be built in the area.

The hearing, which began on Tuesday, January 6, was expected to take several days. Several residents living near the site on the junction of Red Lion Road and Ewell Road were planning to attend and speak out against the development.

A decision will be made by the independent inspector in the next few weeks.
