Being a Swedish retailer, Kingston newcomer Clas Ohlson has proved a popular choice for people looking to buy winter gear in the past two weeks.

The Market Place store, one of its five in the UK, carries more than 10,000 products.

But it has been the winter-ware that has been flying off the shelves, with vacuum flasks, hand warmers and heated socks among the favourites, a spokesman said.

Store manager Jon Peacock said: “Everybody seems to have been affected by the weather. We’ve seen increased sales in torches, head lamps and reflective clothing, as people brave the outdoors.

“Items such as flasks and heaters have also been popular, as people try to stay warm.

“It’s definitely one of the worst winters that we’ve seen, but Clas Ohlson’s Swedish roots mean we’re prepared and we’ve got lots of products that are ideal for this time of year.”
