Kingston's £2m Boris cash draws envious glances from neighbours

The Mayor of London has awarded £2m to revitalise Kingston town centre in a move to make it more of a magnet to visitors.

But the funding has sparked criticism from neighbouring town centres, who missed out in the second round of Boris Johnson’s Outer London Fund announced on Tuesday.

Projects set to benefit include a revamp of the Ancient Market Place, a heritage attraction at All Saints Church, mobile tourist kiosks and a new performing space for young artists.

Liz Ellis, from town centre managers Kingstonfirst, said: “We are delighted to receive investment into the town centre.

“It will help us put Kingston on the map in the future and make us stand out from other towns.”

But traders and businesses in Surbiton, Tolworth, New Malden and Hook said more money should be spent on them.

Steve McManus, owner of Surrey Premier Meats in Ace Parade, Hook, said: “You would think they could allocate a little bit of it to ease the burden of businesses in Hook that are struggling.”

Kingston Council’s bid to the Mayor of London for money for “outlying areas” , including £855,000 for New Malden, was unsuccessful.

New Malden councillor Ken Smith, part of a strategy group for the town, said: “I thought this was to help areas that needed support, certainly New Malden and other outlying areas need support.

“I was very disappointed that we didn’t achieve it.”

The group had applied for money to turn the area around New Malden station into a transport hub, landscape St George’s Square, revamp shop fronts and celebrate the Korean and other communities.

But Lisa Gagliani, chief executive of Kingston Chamber of Commerce, rebuffed the criticism and said Kingston had shown it had a strategy to make the best use of taxpayers’ money.

She said: “Surbiton and Tolworth and New Malden need to get themselves ready to take advantage of similar opportunities in the future.

“Rather than whinging and moaning that everything goes to Kingston they need to start emulating.”

A Greater London Assembly spokeswoman spokesman said: “Due to the volume of applications received for the Outer London Fund we weren’t able to find funds for every project that applied, however the borough of Kingston is benefiting from an investment of over £4m to support regeneration in the area.”

Totally bizarre! Kingston is awarded this grant and they intend to spend it on 'improving' the already lovely Ancient Market Place area?

What about the rotten area around the railway station and down Richmond Road? What about the areas around the bus stations? What about improving the night-time economy by moving away from chav nightclubs and pubs.

These people need to understand that Kingston will never become a proper tourist destination.

If they want to attract more people into the area they will do that by improving on Kingston's strengths. The main one is providing a pleasant area to shop and relax during the day time as a good alternative to going to a sterile Bluewater/Westfield type environment.

In order to do this, they need to make travelling to Kingston a more pleasant experience by improving the areas arounf the main transport hubs and parking.

When you are in the Market Place, you feel like you are in quite a special town centre. When you go to the bus station at Cromwell Road to go home at 6pm, things feel quite different.

Kingston has a fascinating history, a lovely location and parts of the area have a lovely feel about them. It is a nice place to come and spend a day, but I don't think that tourists are going to come and spend a week's holiday here to come and look at the Coronation Stone and Hampton Court Palace.

The comments about the outlying town centres are also valid. Tolworth has been awful for years and the main Victoria Road in Surbiton is very scruffy considering the relative affluence of the area.

Unfortunately, even Kingstonfirst would be able to market these as tourist destinations, so money is unlikely to be forthcoming!

So who exactly is representing Tolworth and the other parts of the borough?

Tolworth has been massively under-invested in for years....most people's perception is that our exorbitant council taxes are primarily used to fund the upkeep of Kingston town centre, with little spent on improving the appearance and infrastructure elsewhere in the borough.

The council and its agencies are there to represent the whole borough, not just Kingston town centre - if they won't invest in Tolworth and New Malden etc. then at least have the decency to reduce our council tax bills accordingly.

New Malden High Street and surrounding areas need all the help it can get, Lisa Gagliani should understand the difference between Disappointment and Wingeing, of course all residents are disappointed but we are NOT moaning or Wingeing and good luck to Kingston Town,
The New Malden Business Forum have been working for years trying to put together plans, she should know that for she is part of it. So if there is a failing it partly hers.

4 millions being spent on Tolworth for a dual carriageway boardwalk, 3 millions for a new junction at malden rushett and now 2 million on tarting up the market place. Boris must think we're made of money. I saw the plans at the consultation display last year absolutely awful - lots of concentric circles centred on the Guildhall with walls and benches to trap litter. Heaven only knows what the cost of upkeep will be. New black-white-black-wh
ite paving for the market place - pointlessly honouring the pretentious and dangerous Eadwaerd Muybridge. Will look lovely covered in the cabbage trimmings from the market stalls. Bonkers Boris, Bonkers.
