Campaigners have revealed 16 per cent of children in Kingston and Surbiton live below the poverty line.

Figures for child poverty across the country have been released as part of a campaign by End Child Poverty in a bid to raise awareness of the poor condition suffered in communities across the UK.

London boroughs dominated areas with the highest child poverty, with Tower Hamlets and Islington showing the worst figures of 52 per cent and 43 per cent respectively.

Neighbouring Richmond has 9 per cent.

Barnardo’s chief executive Anne Marie Carrie said: “Behind today’s statistics sit the most vulnerable children in society, whose life chances risk being compromised by our nation’s failure to tackle child poverty effectively.

“The Government has committed to end child poverty by 2020, but unless action is taken urgently to create better life chances for children, the outlook for families will remain shamefully bleak.”
