Fire chiefs have warned that this year’s Bonfire Night could be the worst for blazes in five years.

The last time the event fell on a weekend, in 2006, the number of fires across London doubled compared to the four years previous, when it fell during the week.

Fire crews were called out to 385 firework and bonfire-related fires, with the control room taking 1,545 calls in a day – averaging one call a minute.

This year, bonfire night will again fall on a weekend, and London Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Kingston is urging residents to attend organised firework displays rather than setting them off at home.

John Elwell said: “Fireworks can be spectacular but they are explosives and can cause serious injuries if handled irresponsibly.

“A trip to hospital or a wrecked property will certainly make you remember the 5th of November, but for all the wrong reasons.

“It’s safer to attend an organised event but if you are having your own celebration take these simple precautions – never play with fireworks, only let adults handle fireworks and when you’re watching them – stand well back.

“Finally, never go near a firework that’s been lit, even if it’s not gone off.”
