Stained glass attracts a Kingston Carnival crowd

A one-month exhibition of stained glass was overwhelmed on its first weekend, when 575 Kingston Carnival-goers popped in to see the art and watch demonstrations from artist Simone Kaye.

The exhibition, at the Market House until September 28, features drawings and paintings used to make stained glass as well as many of her works, including a wishing well with a stained glass roof.

Ms Kaye said: “It was so lovely. The comments people have made in the visitors’ book have been so sweet. They include, ‘Very informative’, ‘Beautiful body of work’ and, ‘Skilful and great work’.”

She first became interested in the medieval art form when studying a foundation degree at then Kingston Polytechnic, and went on to study at Reigate School of Art and Chelsea School of Art.

As well as designing windows for St Ann’s Church in Kingston Hill, St Paul’s in Hook and most recently the Mayor’s Parlour in Kingston Guildhall, she said she was kept busy repairing broken stained glass, especially in the Berrylands area.
