A buzz of excitement surrounded the launch of the Rose Theatre’s first community play on Tuesday, July 27.
Our Town: A Kingston Story is a play to celebrate the past, present and future of Kingston - sweeping through its history and what makes it the community it is today.
Playwright Ciaran McConville and director Jamie Harper will work with local actors and volunteers over the summer to create the new play, which will show from September 9 to 12.
More than 100 people attended Tuesday’s launch to sign up or ask questions, and to hear from Mr Harper and the theatre’s artistic director Stephen Unwin.
Mr Unwin said: “The launch was a great success and it was wonderful to hear the views of so many people from the local community.
“The theatre was buzzing with enthusiasm and ideas. Our Town: A Kingston Story is a tremendously exciting project and there is still time for people who want to join in. The Rose stage door is wide open.”
Surbiton resident Amanda Maidment said: “The launch was very useful and there was a great turn out. It enabled the local community to have a voice.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm and contribution from the locals who attended. I got the opportunity to speak to the theatre team including the director, writer, marketing and technical staff which helped me get a better understanding of what contribution I can make.
“I’ve signed up to audition and I’m extremely excited to become actively involved. It’s a great way for the theatre to give back to the community.”
As well as acting opportunities, which have been extended to anyone over the age of 16, the theatre still has lots of space for costume makers and anyone who can help with marketing.
