Supporters of the Surrey Comet campaign to save Kingston Magistrates' Court will converge on Kingston Guildhall today, to demonstrate their opposition to the Government's closure plans.
The Ministry of Justice last month announced Kingston was one of 157 magistrates' and county courts slated for closure, but campaigners have denounced the threat to the ancient principal of local justice for local people, and questioned the financial case for closure.
Magistrates, councillors, MPs and members of the public are expected to attend the 1pm demonstration.
The court was last under threat in 2002, but a campaign spearheaded by the Surrey Comet forced the Government to reverse the proposals.
Hundreds of people have already signed the Comet's online and paper petitions against the proposals.
See surreycomet.co.uk/savekingstonmagistrates to sign or download the petition.
