More than 20 people evacuated a building after a fire broke out at a block of flats near Kingston Hospital.
Four fire engines were at Galsworthy Road after a lift caught fire on the fourth floor of the block.
Twenty residents left the building before the fire brigade arrived, and seven more were led to safety by firefighters with specialist equipment.
London Fire Brigade was called just before 9am, and crews sent from Kingston, Surbiton and New Malden fire stations had the fire under control by 10.30am.
The lift car was destroyed, but the cause of the fire is not yet known.
