Fears for the jobs of more than 2,500 Maplin staff are growing as stores across south London could close in a matter of weeks.

The electronics chain is desperate to find a buyer before it becomes too late and, failing that, could see branches shut soon.

In Sutton, for example, a branch in the high street has closing down signs in its windows and products are now available at discounted prices.

But workers inside are unsure about an official closing date, with one saying it could be within the next 'two to eight weeks'.

Nearly 130 jobs have already been lost at Maplin's head offices in both London and Rotherham, Yorkshire, while thousands are expected to be made redundant.

It comes as administration was announced last month following the collapse of Toys R Us and firm PwC oversees the process of finding a suitable buyer.

There are a few Maplin stores plotted around south London, including Bromley, Croydon, Kingston, Wimbledon, and Wandsworth, while there are 217 overall in the United Kingdom.
