A “dilapidated” bar in Kingston is to be converted into flats, after the council granted planning permission.

The old Isha Lounge, in Richmond Road, will have a shop at the front and five flats above, for between one and five people each – but no affordable housing.

Described in the design statement from applicant Harris and Company as “a most undistinguished and unattractive structure”, the building is currently occupied by two live-in guardians for security.

Planning permission was granted in 2011 to redevelop the ground floor into a bar/nightclub with four flats above, but this permission has lapsed.

The current permission also includes taking the building back 5m from the property line, to make space for a new cycle lane along Richmond Road.
