A parking officer contracted by Kingston Council was on duty when he suffered fatal injuries in a crash in New Malden.

Beju Shah, 46, who worked for NSL Services, the council's civil enforcement partner, died in hospital days after his moped and a lorry crashed at the junction of Coombe Lane West and Trap's Lane on Thursday, January 5.

London's Air Ambulance, along with paramedics from London Ambulance Service, had taken Mr Shah to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

An NSL spokesman released a statement last night from Mr Shah's colleagues.

It read: "We are deeply upset at the loss of Beju Shah, a mobile civil enforcement officer and experienced rider, who had been with NSL for many years.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time and we are offering support to his many colleagues in the business."

A Kingston Council spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Shah had been on duty at the time of the crash.

She added: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Beju Shah.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. A police investigation is underway."

The driver of the lorry stopped after the crash on Thursday and was not arrested.

A Met Police spokesman said officers were working to understand the cause of the collision.
